On 1882 Charles Haskett purchased a cabinet and undertaking
business in Lucan, Ontario. Typical in rural Ontario, the person who
made a cabinet would also make a casket and embalming, visiting and the
funeral took place in the home. The cabinet maker and undertaker
combination evolved to a funeral home and furniture store business and
also provided transportation for patients in the community to hospitals
and nursing homes, long before ambulance service as we know it today.
Charles's son William continued the business and eventually his
grandsons Arthur and Clarence were also licensed as funeral directors.
Arthur chose to move to Toronto and Clarence took over the business. In
1962, Clarence, with a positive outlook for the future moved the funeral
home operation to the present location, originally the Stanley estate,
leaving the
original building at the corner of Market and Main to house the
furniture store. Bill Haskett, Clarence's son is now president of the
firm and the fourth generation of the family to own the business. The
business has changed to fully commit to funeral service. In 1990 Bill
sold the ambulance service that had been provided since 1970 and
purchased Hopper Hockey Funeral Home in Exeter. The furniture store
closed, the original building sold and many historical artifacts of the
early days of the cabinet maker and undertaker operation in this
province were donated to Fanshawe Pioneer Village in London, Ontario.
Sharing staff, equipment and resources both firms became leaders in
funeral service, among the first to offer many new ideas including
personalized memorial cards with colour photos, grief seminars, and
providing information and receiving condolences through a website.
Celebrating 125 years in Lucan and 17 years in Exeter C. Haskett and Son
Funeral Home Limited and Hopper Hockey Funeral Home Limited amalgamated
in 2007 to form a new company Haskett Funeral Homes. Bill Haskett
continues as President and his son Colin Haskett, also a funeral
director and the fifth generation serves as Vice President.
